Blog #3 Assessing and Evaluating in Learning Different Environments

You have now applied various types of learning and teaching:
  • Creating learning strategies activities
  • Blogging
  • Assessing
  • Evaluating one another
Now that you are really delving into evaluating and assessing activities and one another, consider how you will accommodate peer evaluation in your classroom. How will or did activities like learning strategies, blogging, peer- and self-assessing open your eyes to how differently we all learn and interact with the concept of learning? (If we were in a face-to-face class, you all would also be jigsawing, whiteboarding, etc.) How important is it to let students play a role in assessment (whether peer assessing, creating their own learning strategy activities, or even writing their own quizzes)?

  1. Activities such as learning strategies, blogging, peer- and self-assessing has opened my eyes to how differently we all learn. Some of the activities were more appealing to me than others which is a clear indicator that I have a specific way of doing things and liking certain things better than others. In my opinion, it is important to let student have a role in assessment. (Obviously I will not want students grading exams and such) but I think peer evaluation is important; whether it is simply assessing another students presentation or peer-reviewing and grading a classmates rough draft paper. I also think the idea of having students write their own quizzes is a unique and somewhat fun way of figuring out what the students know and also what they consider to be important. (It might be something I try to incorporate in my future classes)

    1. I agree that students should have a role in assessment. When they evaluate, they not only help us, but they can learn from each other too, rather than only hearing our opinion. I think it will also teach them to give and take constructive criticism, which is a great skill to have! I personally find it tough writing my own quizzes, but I still think it's good for students to do and better comprehend the information.

  2. Through these activities, I have learned a great deal about different learning styles. Because I am a hands-on learner, I really enjoyed creating the task cards and activity. Students who are more interested in reading will enjoy the self-assessment, whereas the student who enjoys writing would rather do the blogging. I think having students play a role in assessment and evaluation is very important in a classroom because we can get more opinions other than our own. Teachers are also all different from each other. A student may get a B on a project for one teacher, but an A for the same assignment, but different teacher because of different opinions. When teachers get input from students on each others work, they help the teacher see parts of the work that they might not have noticed on their own. When students make their own quizzes we can, as Anna said, be able to see what they find important when reading. I will most definitely use student evaluation and self-assessment in my future classroom because I find them both very important to student success!

    1. I agree that student assessment and evaluations are very important. When a student is able to give feedback or constructive criticism, that is a great asset for teachers to have in their classroom. I think it is great that you plan on using student assessment in the future and it will benefit you in many ways.
