Blog #7 DLU Reflection

Diverse Learner Unit Project – Overall, how did it go? What did you learn? How will making accommodations (and getting serious about it) affect how you will (do) plan for your future teaching?     You cannot accommodate all kids all of the time, but quality, constructivist classrooms get close...varying instruction and differentiating learning are the best you can often do. How do you think focusing on creating the most effective lessons possible can help the most students? How did doing this unit facilitate that kind of learning and teaching? Blog by Wednesday, July 5th and respond by Friday, Jan. 7th

  1. Overall, I think it went fairly well. I guess I learned to not underestimate how much time it really takes to make a good, solid lesson plan. Working on learning how to accommodate now will be great help in the future, because I can not be certain of what types of students will come into my classroom (might not even be aware that certain students need accommodations). But learning how to work with all types of students will only make me a better teacher. I think that an effective lesson plan is only effective if it helps all students. (it can be effective for visual learners but if its not auditory friendly then overall it is not effective). Doing this unit helped me realize there are so many ways to teach, but focusing on ways to help different learners will facilitate the best kind of teaching and learning environment.

    1. I agree that I didn't realize how much time and thought it takes to put together an effective lesson plan. It is tough never knowing which type of students we will be getting each year, but that is part of the fun of teaching, I think. It's interesting seeing the various ways each student comprehends things. Really focusing on ways to help different learners is going to be one of the most important things for us to do and I think it'll come much more naturally for us with experience!

  2. I guess I misunderstood and turned in my reflection in an email, sorry!

I thought overall it turned out pretty good, but I did really struggle at the start. I learned that there is a lot more that goes into a unit plan than I thought. I also learned that it's hard to find different ways to accommodate for diverse learners. Learning how to make accommodations, however, will greatly affect my teaching in the future. It's a very important (if not most important) part of a lesson plan. It's important that every child has the best possible opportunities for their learning material. Creating the most effective lesson plans will create the most effective classroom and successful students. Doing this unit helped me realize that every single student is different and one of the most important jobs of a teacher is finding those various ways of teaching the same thing to ensure that each individual understands and comprehends the lesson.

    1. I think it is good that you realize how much you struggled at first, because sometimes it is hard (for me especially) to admit when I have trouble doing things. But lesson planning (with accommodations) is so important, as you said, that the earlier we find out how to make a good one, the better off we will be in the long run. I think you said it best that "one of the most important jobs of a teacher is finding the various ways of teaching the same thing to ensure that each individual understands and comprehends the lesson."
